Downsizing Plus Sizes

Plus-size shoppers are tightening their belts, if not their waistlines. The recession has hurt the sales of the plus-size fashion industry: Bloomingdales has trimmed its large-scale line, and Ellen Tracy has shuttered its plus-size line all together. Companies say this is just because of a shrinking demand, but the dip in sales also likely reflects increased production costs, as it’s more expensive (and takes more fabric) to make plus-size clothes. Either way, women looking for diverse and affordable options in larger sizes are only finding disappointment this season.
