In his first televised interview since Trump staffer Meredith McIver took the fall for including portions of first lady Michelle Obama’s 2008 convention speech in the remarks delivered by Melania Trump on Monday, Donald Trump finally acknowledged the plagiarism had taken place. Calling McIver a “very good person,” Trump told ABC News anchor George Stephanopoulos, “People make mistakes, you’ve made mistakes, we all make mistakes.” The candidate commended McIver for coming forward and even praised the press for not laying too much blame at the feet of his wife. “I thought she made an incredible speech,” Trump said of Melania. “Now that cloud has lifted off her, which is terrific, because it was very unfair.” Before McIver’s statement was released, the Trump campaign spent nearly 48 hours denying the existence of plagiarism in Melania’s speech. The candidate did not accept McIver’s resignation.
