Deported Mentally Ill Get 2nd Chance

Mentally disabled immigrants who had to represent themselves in court before being departed are being given a second chance. Around 900 immigrants, mostly from Latin America and Asia, will be able to contest their deportation with the help of an attorney under a settlement from a class-action lawsuit the ACLU brought against the U.S. government in 2010. “It was a huge victory, truly a landmark ruling, and we’re very happy that our class members were no longer going to be forced to stand alone in court,” said Carmen Iguina, an ACLU attorney who worked on the case.
