Dems Will Meet About Tax Cuts

Democratic leaders will meet Tuesday to try to bridge the divide between different doubts faction of the party of have expressed over supporting President Barack Obama’s economic package. Obama’s proposed plan will end the Bush-era tax cuts on American earning more than $250,000 a year, which has become a key election issue coming into November’s crucial midterm elections. While Republicans have claimed extending the tax cuts will help ease the recession, Democrats are trying to paint the GOP as wanting to support only the richest Americans rather than the average citizen. One source said Tuesday’s meeting is a “temperature-taking” to determine how many votes the Democratic leadership can muster–if the package goes through, it could be an important political win for the party–and then get the bill to a vote.
