Could Google Launch Own Smartphone?

Google insists it bought Motorola Mobility only for its patents, but there’s plenty of speculation in the tech community that the company could soon begin producing its own smartphones. Apple’s decision to integrate hardware and software in the iPhone and iPad has worked so well that Google could follow suit. While Google’s mobile operating system, Android, is currently open—and companies that use it, including HTC, Samsung, and Sony, praised the Motorola Mobility move—some analysts predict it will begin closing Android in two to three years or releasing its own phones with special Android features not available to other smartphone manufacturers. Google’s new CEO, Larry Page, is particularly keen on the mobile business, having pushed the company to purchase Android in the first place.
