CIA Knew Omar Was in Pakistan Hospital

CIA officials were reportedly aware that former Taliban leader Muhammad Omar was being treated at a hospital in southern Pakistan in early 2011, The Washington Post reported Thursday, citing diplomatic files. Former CIA Director Leon Panetta had reportedly confronted then-Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari based on “some raw intelligence” that the wanted fugitive was at the Aga Khan University Hospital in Karachi. U.S. officials say they believe Omar likely died in 2013, which supports claims made this week by Afghan officials that he died while being treated for a serious illness at a Karachi hospital. U.S. intelligence agencies have yet to corroborate Afghanistan’s claims on Omar’s death.
