The Bangladesh national cricket team avoided the deadly New Zealand shootings by seconds when they arrived at Christchurch’s Masjid al Noor mosque for Friday prayers and were warned not to go inside. The team has cut short its New Zealand tour after the traumatic experience. Bangladesh Cricket Board spokesman Jalal Yunus said the team was unharmed but “mentally shocked,” the Straits Times reports. Bangladesh high-performance analyst Shrinivas Chandrasekaran tweeted from the scene: “Just escaped active shooters!!! Heartbeats pumping badly and panic everywhere!!” Cricketer Tamim Iqbal called the experience “frightening,” while teammate Mushfiqur Rahim posted: “We r extremely lucky... never want to see this things happen again... pray for us.” The final test match of Bangladesh’s Australian tour was scheduled to start in Christchurch on Saturday, but has now been scrapped.
