NO HOPE

China Calls Off Hunt for 300 Missing

Chinese rescuers on Friday overturned a ship that capsized on the Yangtze River with more than 400 people on board, in what may be the nation’s deadliest boat disaster in seven decades. Authorities said the chance of finding anyone alive was “slim” as the death toll climbed to 97. Emergency workers planned to shift their focus from rescuing survivors to searching the ship’s 150 cabins for bodies, Transport Ministry spokesperson Xu Chengguang said. The Eastern Star capsized late Monday when it was caught in a storm, with only 14 of the 456 passengers and crew known to have survived. The Xinhua state news agency tweeted a photo of the righted ship with its roof appearing to have been crushed.
