Chelsea Manning, the former U.S. Army private imprisoned for leaking classified information to WikiLeaks, confirmed Monday that she attempted suicide last week and was subsequently hospitalized. In a press release, Manning’s lawyer Chase Strangio relayed a conversation with the whistleblower: “Last week, Chelsea made a decision to end her life. Her attempt to take her won life was unsuccessful. She knows that people have questions about how she is doing and she wants everyone to know that she remains under close observation by the prison and expects to remain on this status for the next several weeks.” Manning was taken Tuesday to a hospital from Fort Leavenworth, where officials declined to comment, citing HIPAA rules. Manning later tweeted that she was "okay."
