CDC: Bizarre Birth Defect on Rise

According to a new report from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, there has been a sharp rise in a particular birth defect in American babies in which infants are born with their intestines extruding from the stomach wall. The increase is particularly high among African American babies, with an astonishing 263 percent rise among children born to young black mothers over an 18 year span covered in the study leading up to 2012. The condition, called gastroschisis leads to digestive and feeding problems which can in turn result in malnutrition.
