Drug War

Cartel Murders Prominent General

A decorated former Mexican general was found tortured and slain in the bed of a pickup-presumably by cartel members-putting a violent end his mission to fight narcotics trafficking and "take back the streets" in the tourist-friendly town of Cancun. The recently retired Gen. Mauro Enrique Tello Quiñones was kidnapped along with his bodyguard and driver in downtown Cancun late last Monday evening before being tortured and eventually executed in the jungle. Mexican officials are determined to topple the suspected cartel known as the "Zetas" as part of an ongoing war against organized crime that claimed 5,300 lives last year.
