Burma Death Toll Tops 100

The Burmese government is pleading for an end to the ethnic strife in the region, as mob violence between the Buddhist Rakhine community and the Muslim Rohingya has caused the death toll on Friday to surge to 112, including 10 children. An additional 72 people have been reported injured during the conflict. The government warned that continued clashes could harm the country’s reputation as it attempts to transition to democratic rule. As entire villages are torched in the region, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called the violence “deeply troubling,” calling on authorities to “take urgent and effective action to bring under control all cases of lawlessness.”
