Mob Trial Twist

Bulger Witness Killed by Cyanide

In the most classic of mob trial twists, the alleged extortion victim of James "Whitey" Bulger who was set to testify at the gangster's trial was killed by cyanide poisoning, the coroner said. But authorities don't believe Stephen Rakes's July death was in relation to the trial, and his business associate was arrested and charged with attempted murder for allegedly poisoning his iced coffee. His associate apparently owed Rakes money. Bulger is being sentenced next month after being convicted of 11 killings and dozens of other crimes.
