British Woman Charged After She Reported Her Rape in Dubai

A British woman who reported that she was raped by two men while she was visiting Dubai has been charged with engaging in extramarital sex. Two men—both British—said to be connected to the case have already returned to the U.K. and face no charges, according to reports. The woman—who is in her twenties—reported that she was attacked by the men in a hotel room. She was arrested, and her passport was confiscated by United Arab Emirates officials. She is prohibited from leaving the country unless the charges are dropped or she is successfully able to appeal, a process that could take months. “She is very frightened over there,” a spokesperson said. A U.K. Foreign and Commonwealth Office spokesperson added, “We are supporting a British woman in relation to this case and will remain in contact with her family.”
