BP Wants to Stop Paying Claims

We’ll see how this plays out: BP, the company faulted for last year’s disastrous oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, said in a 29-page document released today that it should no longer be responsible for paying claims filed by victims of the leak. The British company is arguing that the waters and region have recovered enough to do without the payouts. A $20 billion fund was set up after the disaster to help people whose jobs and livelihoods were affected; BP says that fund should be put to bed now, except for some limited cases, such as oyster harvesters.
