Bernie Sanders: I’m ‘Humiliated’ for Democrats

Bernie Sanders, the progressive firebrand who challenged Hillary Clinton for the Democratic presidential nomination this year, on Monday morning expressed his disappointment that the Democratic party was unable to successfully woo enough white working-class voters in the 2016 presidential election. “I come from the white working class, and I am deeply humiliated that the Democratic party cannot talk to the people where I came from,” Sanders tweeted.

The message echoes what Sanders said on CBS’ Face the Nation on Sunday, in which he accused the party of focusing too much on satisfying the “liberal elite” while ignoring “to a very significant degree the working class and the middle class and lower-income people in this country.”

Donald Trump soared to victory last Tuesday due in part to his support among white working-class voters in states like Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin. Before Election Day, Democrats were confident that these states would remain blue.
