The leader of Bangladesh’s largest Islamist party has been sentenced to death for war crimes. Motiur Rahman Nizami, the head of the Jamaat-e-Islami party, was found guilty of mass murder, rape, and looting during Bangladesh’s war of independence against Pakistan in 1971. He was sentenced to “hang by the neck until his death.” He was behind the killing of many doctors and intellectuals. As a result of the verdict, security has been increased in the country over fears of more violence.
