Baltimore Ties Deadliest Month Record

July was the deadliest month in Baltimore in at least 45 years, with 45 homicides. The last time 45 people were killed in a single month in the city was August 1972. Violence in the city has surged since the April death of Freddie Gray, a 25-year-old who suffered a spinal cord injury while in police custody and later died. Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake has installed a new interim police commissioner in response, has been holding public safety forums, and plans an anti-crime walk at AME Zion Church.
