Australia Sends Unarmed Planes to Iraq

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott said Wednesday that his government is sending two unarmed air force planes to support military operations by the United States-led coalition that’s trying to degrade ISIS in Iraq, but said his country would not yet launch its own airstrikes. Abbott said an early-warning and control aircraft and a refueling plane will join operations from a base outside Dubai. He added that his cabinet was awaiting final clearances from the Iraqi government before deciding on combat missions. Australia’s commitment to combat has been widely anticipated.
