At least one Israeli civilian was killed in what officials say was a cross-border attack by gunmen who crossed from Egypt. In what Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak called a “disturbing deterioration,” the attackers reportedly struck an Israeli construction convoy where the workers were building a security fence near the border between Egypt and Israel. “A terrorist squad opened gunfire and possibly also fired an antitank rocket at an area where [Israel] is constructing the border fence,” an Israeli Army spokesman said. The gunmen appear to have crossed into southern Israel to mount the attack on the construction convoy. At least one of the militants was reported killed by Israeli armed forces.
