At least seven people have been killed and scores are hurt after extreme flooding and tornadoes ravaged parts of the midwest and southern U.S., officials in those states said. Five people were killed in tornadoes in eastern Texas, and the death toll is expected to rise as rescue operations get underway. The body of a 72-year-old woman was found in Missouri after her car was swept away by flood waters. According to the National Weather Service, some areas have been hit with as many as nine inches of rain. In Missouri alone, 33 water rescues took place, the state’s governor said.
