At least 67 people were killed Thursday after scaffolding at a construction site in eastern China collapsed on top of workers. Two other people were injured and one was missing, according to the Associated Press. The accident occurred in Fengcheng in Jianxi province at about 7:30 a.m. About 500 rescue workers were working at the scene, digging through the rubble with their hands, Chinese media reported. Rescue dogs were also used in a bid to locate bodies and survivors. Chinese President Xi Jinping said those responsible for the tragedy must be held accountable, and urged authorities to use the accident as a lesson to learn from. He also called on China’s Cabinet to conduct thorough inspections of all work sites to prevent such accidents from happening in the future.
