Asylum Seekers Hit at 20-Year High

Worldwide applications for asylum have reached a 20-year high, numbers show, in part due to the four-year-old civil war in Syria. Roughly 866,000 people sought asylum in 2014, up 45 percent from the previous year. Most of the applicants went to countries in nearby Europe, but the United States recorded the second-highest number of asylum seekers worldwide.
