Pen to Paper

Are Cursive's Days Numbered?

Will cursive go the way of the abacus? Elementary school teachers are worried about the lack of attention proper penmanship is receiving in today’s lesson plans, the Augusta Chronicle reports. “It’s definitely going away,” one teacher said, citing that there is nothing on her curriculum solely focused on that “secret language of adults.” Another teacher remembers a time less than two decades ago when it accounted for 30 to 45 minutes of the day’s curriculum. The growing use of computers and standardized tests may be a driving factor in the rising absence of pen-to-paper time, though many teachers argue out that the lessons shouldn’t be sacrificed.
