Afghan Donkey Bomb Kills 3 U.S. Soldiers

A suicide bomber riding a donkey detonated a bomb in Afghanistan’s Wardak province Tuesday, killing three American and four Afghan soldiers, along with an interpreter, and wounding at least three more Americans. The area is a hotbed of insurgent activity, and tensions have recently escalated after at least 17 Afghan villagers detained by American special forces were later found dead, with evidence of torture. The Taliban immediately claimed responsibility for today’s attack, which comes as NATO prepares for an eventual withdrawal. The international force is scheduled to transition into a noncombat mission in Afghanistan in 2014.
