9 Deaths Linked to Cancer From Implants

A rare cancer linked to breast implants in 2011 has been associated with nine deaths, the Food and Drug Administration revealed Tuesday. According to a report in The New York Times, the agency received 359 reports of cancer associated with the implants as of Feb. 1. The deaths have not been caused by breast cancer but rather anaplastic large-cell lymphoma, a malignancy in the immune system. It is often treatable and not often fatal. The problem is more likely to occur with textured implants, according to the FDA. The FDA also determined that it was impossible to say just how many cases exist.
