Death Toll

5,000 Dead or Missing After Quake

Three days after Japan’s 9.0 magnitude earthquake and tsunami, more than 5,000 people are dead or missing—and The New York Times says, police officials are “certain” that more than 10,000 people have died. On Monday, 2,000 bodies washed up on two separate beaches in Miyagi. The number of actual missing is also much higher than the official number: In the town of Minamisanriku, for example, the local government has been unable to contact 10,000 people, which is half the local population.
