A three-alarm fire in the Bensonhurst neighborhood of Brooklyn early Saturday killed five people, including a mother who in desperation tossed her two children out the window to safety. The 2-month-old daughter sustained serious head injuries when she hit the sidewalk. The 2-year-old son was lowered from the window in a car seat. Child safety bars on the windows may have blocked escape routes, and the building's rear fire escape was also obstructed by furniture. Thirteen firefighters were injured while battling the fire for nearly three hours.
