200,000 Evacuated Near Nuke Plants

Complicating a massive search and rescue effort, emergencies at two nuclear power plants in Japan have forced officials to evacuate more than 200,000 people in surrounding areas. In a massive explosion at one of the plants Saturday morning, one worker was killed and six more were injured—but Japanese authorities cautioned that a widespread leak of radiation could be avoided. At least three people have been confirmed as being exposed to radiation, though it’s difficult to assess at this point how dangerous those radiation levels will be.
