1961 ‘Whites Only’ Convictions Tossed

Nine black men who dared to sit at a “whites only” restaurant in 1961 will finally have the crime expunged from their records. Instead of paying a $100 fine, the “Friendship 9” went to jail for 30 days in Rock Hill, South Carolina. A judge is expected to clear their names Wednesday. Proving that the wheels of justice turn slowly, the men’s names are already engraved on the restaurant’s seats.
