At least 16 people a day were murdered in March in El Salvador, a country of just 6.34 million. That made March the most violent month in the country in at least 10 years. El Salvadore, along with its neighbor Honduras, has one of the highest homicide rates in the world. The reason for the increase was the broken truce between two of El Salvador’s most dangerous gangs. The truce was brokered by the government. Government officials in the country often find mass graves or streets where bodies are dumped on the sidewalks.
